TIFF09: Early Thoughts

tiff09 1Well my favourite and most busy time of the year is upon us again with buzz beginning for the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival.

For the fourth year, I will be making my rounds as a volunteer. This year, I hope to become a captain, however I would be content with remaining a normal theatre captain if that came to be. Either way, I will post my volunteer logs right here.

A number of the films have already been announced and I will now take time to provide thoughts on some of them sorted by programme.

Midnight Madness
We shall start with the ever-popular genre film programme with its eccentric selection of films.

The big film at this year's Midnight Madness program will be Jennifer's Body, a teen horror film written by Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody and staring and . I'm sure tickets for that one would go quickly.

Other notable films in the program are [Rec] 2, a sequel to a Spanish horror film that was remade as Quarantine, George A. Romero's latest zombie film Survival of the Dead, the -staring vampire film Daybreakers, and the martial arts sequel Ong Bak 2: The Beginning.

Vanguard
The film that stands out for me in the Vanguard programme this year is the concert documentary The White Stripes Under Great Northern Lights, which documents the band's tour of Canada from two years ago. Should be interesting.

Well those are the stand-out films for me. As more films are announced, I will be use give more thoughts on them.

This year looks to be a good festival.
