Box Office Thoughts for the Weekend of May 8, 2009

StarTrekPosterStar Trek boldly went where no film in the series has gone before with an estimated opening gross of $72.5M, topping the weekend box office. This is the highest opening gross ever for a Star Trek film, with the next closest being the $30.7M Star Trek: First Contact opened with in 1996. The film is already has the number five top gross in the series and is sure to increase that ranking during the remainder of its run.

Rounding out the figures for the week last week’s top film, X-Men Origins: Wolverine dropped to second place with an estimated gross of 27M and the only other new release for the week, Next Day Air, opened in sixth place with an estimated gross of $4M.

And that’s the box office thoughts for this week.
