Fan Expo 2013: The Price of Growth

FANEXPOlogo I went to Fan Expo Canada for the first time in 2009.  Before that time, I decided to skip out on the convention, because I was taken aback by how pricey the tickets were.  In fact, if it wasn’t for the fact that James Duval from Donnie Darko was appearing, I probably would have also skipped the Expo in 2009 as well.  I have returned to Fan Expo every year since and it has burned a deeper hole in my pocket each and every time. Fan Expo has announced the ticket details for this year’s show and I can’t say that I am particularly that happy about them.  The four day deluxe pass, which is what I typically get, now costs $115 (plus surcharges).  With Fan Expo expanding to both buildings of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, it is somewhat understandable why there is a need for a higher price.  While it is about $35 cheaper than four one day passes, I am not too eager to immediately commit that amount of money to the convention. Like last year, the tickets for Fan Expo will be going on sale four months early on April 1 (this upcoming Monday).  The realities of prioritizing my limited budget will mean that I definitely won’t be able to get a pass for Fan Expo right away.  I have other costs to worry about and I don’t want to add the cost of the convention to them right now.  I’m definitely at a bit of a crossroads, where I have to ask myself whether or not Fan Expo is worth the plunge this year. I haven’t completely written out Fan Expo this year and the worst case scenario is that I go back to buying a single day pass.  However, I’m going to keep an eye on the Fan Expo announcements and reassess in a month or two whether or not I will be getting a full deluxe pass this year.
