A rebellious teenager seeks the help of a UFO society to locate her missing father in UFO Sweden. For the past eight years, Denise (Inez Dahl Torhaug) has been in foster care under the watchful eye of sympathetic police officer Tomi (Sara Shirpey) after her ufologist father, Uno (Oscar Töringe), disappears while following a lead. When a car, looking a lot like her father’s, mysteriously crashes in a barn, among reports of red lights in the sky, Denise seeks the help of the amateur ufology society UFO Sweden, run by Uno’s old friend Lennart (Jesper Barkselius), to try and uncover the truth about her father’s disappearance.
UFO Sweden Synopsis
UFO Sweden is a mid-1990s sci-fi adventure co-written and directed by Victor Danell and is inspired by a real UFO investigation society in Sweden. UFO Sweden’s chairman, Lennart, is a former employee of the research institute SMHI, where he holds a grudge against head researcher Kicki (Eva Melander), who he suspects is secretly continuing the UFO research Uno was conducting when he disappeared. Most of the members of UFO Sweden are willing to help Denise find the truth about her father’s disappearance, except for distrustful curmudgeon Gunnar (Håkan Ehn).
My Thoughts on UFO Sweden
Similarly to Stranger Things, UFO Sweden is a film that comes across as a throwback to the Amblin Entertainment films of the 1980s and 1990s. This includes a group of nerds going rogue, scientists seemingly up to no good, and an authority figure who switches back and forth between caregiver and antagonist. Throw in a throwback record-drop of Alphaville’s “Forever Young,” and UFO Sweden ends up being quite an entertaining film.
