Canadian Screen Awards 2017: Nominee Refresh and Predictions

CanadianScreenAwards 1

Tonight is the night of the 2017 edition of the Canadian Screen Awards. Because the nominees were announced so close to the Oscars announcement, I never got to writing about them. However, I have decided that I will combine my nominee refresh and predictions into one post, to help get ready for tonight’s awards.

Best Picture

Nominee Refresh:

My Prediction: It’s Only the End of the World
Like last year, I managed to see about half of the nominated film, most of which at Canada’s Top Ten back in January. I’m pretty confident that will continue his dominance of the Canadian Film Industry with a win here, though Those Who Make Revolution Halfway also has the chance of an upset.
Achievement in Direction
My Prediction: Xavier Dolan
I don’t see this one going to anyone else.
Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role

Nominee Refresh:
My Prediction: (Hello Destroyer)
Hello Destroyer is a film that examines Canada’s violent hockey culture and Jared Abrahamson’s performance as an enforcer thrown under the bus is right at the centre of it.
Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role

Nominee Refresh:
My Prediction: (The Other Half)
Tatiana Maslany’s performance as a bipolar woman is probably one of the most standout elements of The Other Half

Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role

Nominee Refresh:

My Prediction: (It’s Only the End of the World)
Yes, Cassel is the only foreign actor on this list, but he is a tour de force is It’s Only the End of the World

Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role

My Prediction: Gabrielle Tremblay (Those Who Make Revolution Halfway Only Dig Their Own Graves)
As the first transgender woman to be nominated for a Canadian Screen Award, I believe that her performance in Those Who Make Revolution Halfway is strong enough to win.

Original Screenplay

My Prediction: Kevin Funk (Hello Destroyer)

Hello Destroyer is a film that criticizes the violent culture of hockey without condemning the sport itself, all thanks to the film’s strong screenplay.

Adapted Screenplay

My Prediction: Xavier Dolan (It’s Only the End of the World)

The screenplay is one of the best aspect of Dolan’s latest.
