The Canadian Screen Awards was presented last night with the big winner of the night being Xavier Dolan‘s It’s Only the End of the World, which won six awards, including Best Picture and Director. The runner-up was Race, which won four awards, including Best Actor for Stephan James. The awards also solidified the fact that Tatiana Maslany is one of the best actresses in Canada right now, as she won for both the film The Other Half and the TV series Orphan Black.
This year I got 8 out of 24 predictions correct, with most of them being for the major categories. My initial plan to live stream the awards didn’t quite work out as expected, as I decided to end the stream a half hour into the broadcast, due to inactivity. I might try it again at a later date, but as of right now I don’t have any future plans for live streams.
This year the ceremony was hosted by Howie Mandel, who did a remotely better job than Norm MacDonald did last year. Like last year, there was a running gag over the nickname of the awards, with Mandel coming of with an acronym for screen, television, and digital or STD.
One sad realization I got watching the Canadian Screen Awards is that I only watched a handful of the nominated films and barely one of the nominated television series, that being Orphan Black, which I’ve only recently started watching old episodes of. It’s blatantly obvious that the Quebecois market continues to dominate the Canadian film industry and it sad that an acclaimed English-language film such as Hello Destroyer ended up being shut out of the awards. Perhaps there should be separate awards for Canada’s two very different film markets.
Well, that wraps up my very brief coverage of this year’s Canadian Screen Awards. Hopefully I’ll be more on the ball next year.
