It was a pretty predictable night at the Golden Globes last night as La La Land ended up being the big winner of the night with a clean sweep of its 7 nominations, including Best Picture – Comedy/Musical, Best Director, and acting awards for stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. It seems like the stage is set for La La Land to dominate the Academy Awards, with its primary opponent being Moonlight, which won for Best Picture – Drama.
La La Land‘s sweep helped me secure 8 of my 14 predictions for the awards, with there being a few surprising wins that caught me off guard. Probably the most surprising win of all was French actress Isabelle Huppert winning the award for Best Actress – Drama for her performance in Paul Verhoeven’s Elle, which also took away the Best Foreign Language Film prize. Another very shocking win was Aaron Taylor-Johnson winning the Best Supporting Actor Award over the heavily favoured Mahershala Ali.
In about two weeks time the nominations will be announced for the 88th annual Academy Awards, so it will be interesting to see if the Golden Globe wins influence who gets nominated for the big prize.
