It’s that time again….
This morning saw the announcement of the initial line-up of films for this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, consisting of 17 Galas and 45 Special Presentations.
I am personally happy with the announcement that Rian Johnson’s Looper, a film that I am personally quite looking forward to, will be the opening film of the festival. As a life-long lover of genre films, this is a great move for TIFF. I’m definitely going to attempt to see this film at the festival (likely in a repeat screening) if I can.
Now to rundown some of the other films announced:
Argo – Ben Affleck, USA (Gala Presentations)
As somewhat expected, Ben Affleck‘s third film as a director will be making its world premiere at the festival.
Cloud Atlas – Tom Tykwer, Andy Wachowski, Lana Wachowski, USA (Special Presentations)
The directors of Run Lola Run and The Matrix team up for this new sci-fi epic starring Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, and Hugo Weaving.
Dangerous Liaisons – Hur Jin-Ho, China (Gala Presentations)
This is a new Chinese adaptation of the classic French novel starting Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon‘s Zhang Ziyi. Interesting.
End of Watch – David Ayer, USA (Special Presentations)
A found-footage crime flick staring a bald Jake Gyllenhaal
Hyde Park on the Hudson – Roger Mitchell, UK (Gala Presentations)
Bill Murray plays Franklin D. Roosevelt
A Liar’s Autobiography – The Untrue Story of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman – Ben Timlett, Bill Jones, Jeff Simpson, UK (Special Presentations)
A 3D animated tribute to the late Monty Python member.
Much Ado About Nothing – Joss Whedon (USA)
Whedon does Shakespeare. ‘Nuff Said!
The Perks of Being a Wallflower – Stephen Chbosky, USA (Special Presentations)
A coming-of-age tale starring Emma Watson
Quartet – Dustin Hoffman, UK (Special Presentations)
Dustin Hoffman makes his directorial debut with a film about four aging opera singers
To The Wonder, Terrence Malick, USA (Special Presentations)
This is definitely one of the shortest turnaround times for a Terrence Malick film. I expect that this will be a hot ticket at the festival.
Well, those are my highlights of the films announced today. There will be many more film announcements within the coming weeks as we count down to the start of the 2012 Toronto Film Festival, which begins on September 6.
