Well, it’s time once again to dissect the nominations for the 88th annual Academy Awards. I’m going to stick most of my preamble and get straight on to my random thoughts on the nominees, which did in fact include a few surprises.

  • It was a surprisingly strong showing for Mad Max: Fury Road, which ended up receiving ten nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for George Miller.
  • Mad Max will be competing with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in many of the technical categories, with the two going head-to-head in four of the latter’s five nominations
  • Once again, there are eight Best Picture nominees in total, with me having seen six of them. I still need to catch up with Brooklyn and Bridge of Spies.
  • No surprises at all in the nominations for Best Actor
  • stands out among the Best Supporting Actor nominees
  • Best Actress looks to be a fight between and . Hoping the latter wins.
  • I almost missed ‘s nomination for The Danish Girl, since it was placed in the Best Supporting Actress category. The only other surprise in that category is nomination for for The Hateful Eight, a film which only received three nominations in total.
  • Inside Out is the sole CGI film among the Best Animated Film nominees, which includes two hand-drawn and two stop motion films. Almost a shame that Inside Out will be the likely winner.
  • I’m really hoping that The Look of Silence wins for Best Documentary, even though once again Joshua Oppenheimer has to contend with a popular music documentary (that being Amy).
  • Theeb and Son of Saul stand out as the film’s most likely to win in the Foreign Language Film category
  • This year has probably one of the most weakest Best Song selections I have ever seen. I’m guessing it will probably go to either ‘s song for The Hunting Ground (which strangely was NOT nominated for documentary) or Sam Smith’s melancholy theme for Spectre
  • I’m hoping Ennio Morricone to win for Best Score
  • I really wish Ex Machina got more than two nomination, though it is great that one of them is for original screenplay, which also saw Straight Out of Compton get a nomination.
Those are my thoughts! The Oscars will be presented on February 28!
