the 2017 Oscar Nominees

9Oscars

This morning saw the announcement of the nominees for the 90th annual Academy Awards. There is lot that I can say about this year’s nominees, so I am going to get straight to it.

  • The leading nominee is The Shape of Water with 13 nominations, which makes me quite happy as a fan of . Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, my favourite film of last year, also has a decent turn out with 8 nominations.
  • I’ve already seen eight of the nine Best Picture nominees. I’ll try and catch up with Call Me By Your Name ASAP.
  • Does truly need ANOTHER Best Actress nomination?
  • is now the oldest ever Oscar nominee, for a film he was a last minute replacement on.
  • The Netflix-produced Mudbound received four nominations, including Best Supporting Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay. However, we have yet to see a film released to a streaming service get a Best Picture nomination
  • Get Out now has the distinction of being one of the few horror films to get a Best Picture nomination. Hopefully The Academy acknowledges this fact.
  • It is almost sad that the Best Make-Up Award has moved away from the creature effects it was founded for. As such, Victoria & Abdul got a nomination, while The Shape of Water never even made it to the shortlist
  • After gaining major momentum from its Golden Globes win, In the Fade ended up being completely snubbed in the Best Foreign Language Film category. It’s a shame, because it would’ve been my pick to win.
  • The Boss Baby really stands out among the nominations for Best Animated Film. Really?
  • I’ve only seen one of the Best Documentary nominees, so I have some catching up to do
The 90th Academy Awards will be presented on Sunday, March 4, 2018
