Box Office Thoughts for the the Weekend of May 16, 2008

prince caspian posterSo, it is time for my very first Box Office Thoughts column. According to the estimates on IMDb, the top ten this weekend was the following:

  1. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian – $56.6M
  2. Iron Man – $31.2M
  3. What Happens in Vegas… – $13.8M
  4. Speed Racer – $7.64M
  5. Baby Mama – $4.59M
  6. Made of Honor – $4.5M
  7. Forgetting – $2.54M
  8. Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay – $1.8M
  9. The Forbidden Kingdom – $1M
  10. The Visitor – $687K

It’s a bittersweet victory for Prince Caspian. While $56.6M was a solid number, it is about $10M short of the opening gross for The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.

Iron Man continues to do strong, with it’s total North American gross currently at $222M, which makes the film likely to end up with more than the $262.7M Entertainment Weekly had predicted it would make.

The sad story of the week is how Speed Racer continues to underwhelm at the box office, with it’s two week gross at only $29.8M.

And that’s my box office thoughts for the week.
