Box Office Thoughts for the Weekend of August 1, 2008

DarkKnightPosterSorry for the delay of this week’s Box Office Thoughts. Starting this week, I will just include my analysis, while the current numbers will now be always shown in the sidebar (thanks to Box Office Mojo).

The Dark Knight is at the top of the box office for the third week in a row and it now the top grossing film of the year with $393.7M.

There is some talk that The Dark Knight may have a chance at beating Titanic’s domestic total of $600M. However, in my opinion, because of both the inflation of tickets prices since 1997 (I currently pay about $12 CAD) and the premium price of IMAX tickets (about $15), it wouldn’t be that great a feat if Dark Knight topped Titantic.

As for the new releases, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor had a decent opening in second place total of $40.5M, which was only about $2M behind Dark Knight. The other major new opening Swing Vote opened in 6th place with $6.2M.

And that’s the Box Office Thoughts for this week.
