I am absolutely devastated to hear that comedian Robin Williamshas died today at the age of 63. While it has not yet been officially confirmed, the reports are that Williams had been suffering from serious depression lately and that his death was an apparent suicide. Robin Williams was a comedian I literally grew up watching, with me probably first recognizing him from the film Good Morning Vietnam in 1987, though, at the age of 5, I was probably way too young to see the film at the time. My first proper exposure to Williams was when he starred as an adult Peter Pan in Steven Spielberg‘s 1991 fantasy Hook, which was followed a year later by memorable voice-over roles in Aladdin and FernGully: The Last Rainforest. However, it is 1993’s hilarious cross-dressing comedy Mrs. Doubtfire, which will end up being my most fond memory of Williams. While known primarily for his comedy, which includes the sitcom Mork & Mindy and his multiple HBO stand-up specials, Williams also tackled dramatic roles. He received Oscar nominations for his roles in Good Morning Vietnam, Dead Poets Society (1989), The Fisher King (1991), and Good Will Hunting (1997), the latter of which he won. In 2002, Williams acted in what he called his “Dark Side Trilogy” of Death to Smoochy, Insomnia, and One Hour Photo, all of which had Williams playing much darker roles than he was known for. I’m still trying to process the sudden loss of one of my favourite comedians and I will most definitely say that Robin Williams will be missed. Here are some clips from Williams’ career: Popeye (1980) The Fisher King (1991) (Warning: Contains course language) Hook (1991) Aladdin (1992) Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) Jumanji(1995) Good Will Hunting (1997) (Warning: Contains some foul language) One Hour Photo (2002)
