The trailer has arrived for Richard Linklater’s Before Midnight. The film reunites us with Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) nearly two decades after they first met on that train to Vienna. The film follows them on vacation in Greece and how their relationship is different now that they have hit middle age. When Richard Linklater made Before Sunrise back in 1995, I don’t think he expected it to turn into a trilogy of films that showed the progression of a relationship in real time. In Before Sunrise, Jesse and Celine were in their 20s and likely did not expect to see each other again after their one night together in Vienna. When they crossed paths again a decade later in Paris, they were in their 30s and seemed ready to settle down. Now we have Before Midnight. It is apparent from the start in this trailer that Jesse and Celine have now been together for some time and now have a family together. The film looks to be reflecting on whether or not the two of them still feel the same for each other in their 40s, than they did on that one night 18 years ago. This trilogy could possibly end up going down as one of the most un-clichéd cinematic romances and I quite look forward to seeing the film when it is released on May 24.
