Oscar 2019 Predictions
Martin Scorsese Teaches Filmmaking

Tonight is the the 91st Academy Awards and it is time for me to make my annual Oscar predictions! Let’s get straight to them!
Best Picture – Green Book
In a perfect world, I would say that Roma would be a shoe-in for the big prize and I’m sure that film will still end up getting the most Oscars. However, since I’m not confident that this year will be the one that breaks the streak of Foreign Language Films being shutout of Best Picture, I’ll choose Green Book.
Directing – Alfonso Cuarón, Roma
It would definitely be poetic that Alfonso Cuarón wins his second Oscar for a Mexican film in a year when the President of the US seem adamant to building a border wall.
Writing (Original Screenplay) – Paul Schrader, First Reformed
Those who know me are probably well aware that I don’t really care much for First Reformed or any of Paul Schrader’s latter day films for that matter. However, I do believe that the Academy will use this first nomination for Schrader to finally award him for (better) career accomplishments, such as Taxi Driver and Raging Bull.
Writing (Adapted Screenplay) – Barry Jenkins, If Beale Street Could Talk
It’s almost a crime that If Beale Street Could Talk didn’t get more nomination, so I’m hopeful that the Academy at least recognizes Jenkins stellar adaptation of the novel by James Baldwin.
Actor in a Leading Role – Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody
While the film itself has its problems, including who directed it, Rami Malek essentially became Freddie Mercury with his performance and it’s starting to look like he is a shoe-in to win.
Actor in a Supporting Role – Mahershala Ali, Green Book
This is probably the most difficult of the acting categories to predict, however I am going to say that Mahershala Ali will probably get his second Oscar, even though I would argue that he is actually the lead of Green Book.
Actress in a Leading Role – Glenn Close, The Wife
There was a period when it seemed that this would be Olivia Colman‘s to lose, however Glenn Close has been winning practically every acting award for this role, so it’s fair to say that she finally gets her Oscar tonight.
Actress in a Supporting Role – Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk
Other than Glenn Close, this is probably the most sure pick of the acting categories.
That wraps up my predictions for the major categories. Here are my predictions for the remaining categories:
