Oscar Week ’09: My Favourite Non-Winners – Mystic River
Martin Scorsese Teaches Filmmaking
In comparison to the anger I experienced the previous year, I don’t think I was too distraught when Lord of the Rings: Return of the King beat this film for Best Picture, especially after the win won two well-deserved acting awards for Sean Penn and Tim Robbins.
This film marks the beginning of the period, where Clint Eastwood began to stay behind the camera for his films. While he won the next year for Million Dollar Baby, I found the better of the two films.
The highlight of this film is the performances, especially that of Tim Robbins as a man, who is troubled after being molested as a kid.
Mystic River is a true example of how film can be used to tell a good story and even though it didn’t win, I still enjoy watching it over and over.
