Here are thoughts on the films that screened during the second short film showcase at the 2018 Blood in the Snow Film Festival.
That’s Not Me
A woman wakes up to her friend Amber at the front door, but then receives a phone call from the same friend. That’s Not Me is a short film with a doppelganger storyline that isn’t exactly the most original plot, but the film is still pretty well executed.
[usr=3.5]The Girl in the Black Dress
As a woman gets ready to go out, a strange man enters her out. The Girl in the Black Dress is a short film with a vaguely noir feel to it. Ultimately, the film is all about the punchline at the end, which is somewhat clever.
[usr=3.5]Binge
A woman receives a USB key with strange video and coordinates, which kicks off a mysterious scavenger hunt. With a plot strange out of an urban legend, Binge is a short film that is able to tell its story without any dialogue, as it builds to its twisted conclusion.
[usr=4]Hot Anger
It is very hard for me to described the plot of Hot Anger, which is a very weird and surreal science fiction story. I am reminded somewhat of the films of Astron-6, however this film is perhaps a bit too messed up for my liking.
[usr=3]In Death Unparted
A clingy girl finds out that the love of her life is now a vampire. In Death Unparted can almost be described as an anti-romance, since even in death, this poor man can’t escape a girl completely obsessed with him. Pretty well done for a student film.
[usr=4]Standby
A Mexican man tries to smuggle his wife through his luggage, however is dismayed when she is lost in transit. Standby is a short film that comments on immigration and the extremes that some are willing to go through, before progressing in a more spooky direction as this man begins to be haunted by guilt.
[usr=4]House Among the Trees
A man checks in on a neighbour’s cottage, only to find that it’s already occupied. House Among the Trees is a short film that is building up to its supernatural twist. It’s a decent film, but the plot isn’t all that deep.
[usr=3.5]The Chicken Man
A suicidal man is saved by a chicken. The Chicken Man is a very unusual story starring a very unusual man. Don’t really know what to think about this one.
[usr=3]Lay Them Straight
A girl suffering from OCD fears what might happen if she stops counting. Lay Them Straight is a pretty well done short film that tackles both mental illness and bullying, with a plot somewhat reminiscent of Carrie.
[usr=4]The Whistler
A teenage girl tells her younger sister an urban legend that horrifyingly comes to life. The Whistler is a proof of concept short for an eventual feature, which has a plot that essentially combines the Pied Piper of Hamelin with A Nightmare on Elm Street. This short film does a good job at establishing the titular supernatural villain and I would be interested to see where the feature goes.
[usr=4]Time Heals No Wounds
A scientist experimenting with time travel, receives a message from himself that leads to dark consequences. Time Heals No Wounds is a twisted little sci-fi themed horror-comedy that progresses from a time travel story to something else entirely. This is a quite enjoyable short to watch.
