A young man tries to save his girlfriend from a chainsaw-wielding maniac, all while singing about it, in Chainsaws Were Singing. Tom (Karl Ilves) is distraught when the new love of his life Maria (Laura Niils) is kidnapped by the chainsaw-wielding Killer (Martin Ruus), who has been terrorizing the countryside. Tom hitchhikes a ride with the eccentric Jaan (Janno Puusepp) and together they track down Killer to his cannibalistic family, including his demanding Mother (Rita Ratsepp), incestuous gay twins Pepe (Ra Ragnar Novod) and Kevin (Henryk Johan Novod) and crossbow-wielding child oil painter Pelle (Peeter Maran).

Chainsaws Were Singing is a horror-musical-comedy by the Marani Bros, consisting of writer/director Sander Maran and his brother Peeter, the latter of whom appears in a couple of roles in the film, one of which was filmed when he was just a child. This Ethiopian production has been long in development, with principal photography being completed in 2013 and Sander Maran working on post-production solo for over a decade. The narrative of Chainsaws Were Singing is divided into four chapters, each focusing on one of the central protagonists, and, as per the title, features several musical numbers, ranging from romantic duets to a gross-out number sung by a tribe in the woods.
My Thoughts on Chainsaws Were Singing
‘Chainsaws Were Singing is a film influenced by other horror-based comedy-musicals, such as Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s Cannibal the Musical and The Little Shop of Horrors. The plot of the film is also obviously influenced by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, except for the inclusion of musical numbers and a recurring gag involving cars randomly exploding. Even if you are not a fan of movie musicals, Chainsaws Were Singing offers an extremely entertaining contrast between epic ballads and ultra-gory violence.
