Content Advisory: Homophobia
The world of an employee of a chicken packing factory turns upside down with the return of her old friend and love interest in Chuck Chuck Baby. Helen (Louise Brealey) is a woman in North Wales working in a chicken packing factory, with half of her wages going to her ex-husband Gary (Celyn Jones). Despite Gary having a newborn baby with another woman, Helen still lives with him for the benefit of her sickly mother-in-law Gwen (Sorcha Cusack). However, Helen’s world soon takes an unexpected turn with the return of Joanne (Annabel Scholey), who exchanged teenage passions with Helen two decades earlier.
Chuck Chuck Baby Synopsis
Chuck Chuck Baby is a musical dramedy written and directed by Janis Pugh. The film takes its title from the name of the chicken packing plant, where the protagonist Helen, played by Louise Brealey (Sherlock) works her dead-end job. Living a lonely existence and being forced to give half her wages to her ex-husband Gary, who has a newborn baby with his girlfriend Amy (Emily Fairn). Helen seems to have a chance at love with the return of her teenage crush Joanne, played by Annabel Scholey (Doctor Who), though the latter is also dealing with something darker from her past.
My Thoughts on Chuck Chuck Baby
Chuck Chuck Baby can be described as a literal jukebox musical, as the characters sing along to classic rock songs. At the core of the plot of the film is the rekindled lesbian romance between the protagonists Helen and Joanne, even though the life circumstances of both might prevent them from coming together. Altogether Chuck Chuck Baby is a quirky Welsh mix of lesbian romantic comedy, sing-along jukebox musical, and chicken.
