A teenage girl undergoes some unexpected changes in . Mia () is a 15 year old girl, who has just moved to a new town and has lived for much of her life under the strict control of her parents. This results in Mia getting a bit of a rebellious streak, as she begins hanging out with a group of troublemaking girls, particularly Gianna (). However, Mia’s life becomes further complicated when she begins to experience the changes that come with puberty, including a number of unexpected ones.

With Blue My Mind, first time filmmaker creates a typical teenage coming-of-age story, interspersed with some genre elements. As Mia begins to experience changes and cravings that are very unexpected for her, she begins to question the very nature of her upbringing. This in many ways causes Mia to act out through shoplifting, drug use, and promiscuity. As the changes intensify, Mia literally starts turn into a different kind of person.

It is hard for me to hard too much about Blue My Mind without delving too much into spoiler territory, though it is the the latest example of genre being used to illustrate the changes that goes through a women in puberty, in a similar vein to films such as Ginger Snaps and more recently Raw. In fact, for much of its running time, Blue My Mind can be considered much more of a drama than a genre film and it isn’t until well into the second half of the film that the nature of Mia’s changes become apparent. Overall, Blue My Mind is decent entry in the subgenre of coming-of-age tales with genre tropes.
