A woman who runs a hidden video channel exposing classified scams finds herself the target of a twisted revenge fantasy in Follow Her. Jess Peters (Dani Barker) is a woman who runs a web series called “Classified Crazies” on the video social media site Live Hive. She secretly films and exposes men who post classified ads with ulterior motives. For her latest video, Jess travels to the middle of nowhere to meet Tom Brady (Luke Cook), who posted an ad looking for a co-writer for a screenplay. However, when Jess arrives at Tom’s barn-turned-house, she realizes that the screenplay’s plot is similar to her life.
Follow Her is a psychological thriller directed by Sylvia Caminer and written by and starring Dani Baker. The film is a cautionary tale about classified ads and social media while also tackling issues of consent. Protagonist Jess Peters makes a mistake early in the film when she realizes the face of one of her targets is unblurred, yet she opts to do nothing due to the video’s growing popularity. This makes Jess the target of an elaborate revenge plot which goes way deeper than she would expect.
One of the most poignant scenes of Follow Her comes in the third act when Jess tries to report what happened to her with Tom Brady, but the complaints fall on deaf ears due to her own history of filming men without consent. However, the ironic nature of Tom’s revenge plot gets a bit overblown when the film suddenly introduces a hard-to-swallow dark web element. That said, Follow Her still leaves you with a lot to think about involving what you post online.
