Musician Gary Numan prepares to make a comeback after a six year hiatus in Gary Numan: Androd in La La Land. Since arriving on the music scene in the late-1970s Gary Numan has come to be known as the Godfather of electronic pop music, with him having a career spanning nearly four decades. After taking a self-imposed hiatus following a bout with depression, Numan relocates with his family to Los Angeles and begins work on his comeback album “Splinter.”
Even if you haven’t followed his entire 39 year career, it can almost be a given that you would have at least heard Gary Numan’s 1979 breakthrough hit “Cars,” which is probably one of the best known songs from the 1980s. However, as a man suffering from Asperger’s, Numan finds it difficult to find connections with other people and probably wouldn’t get by if it wasn’t for the undying support from his wife Gemma. Gary Numan: Android in La La Land takes a look at the man behind the music, as Gary Numan works on creating his first album in six years.
There are some moments when Gary Numan: Android in La La Land seems like its a commercial for Gary Numan’s “Splinter” album, with the film even showing quotes from the rave reviews the album received after its release. However, the film is also a very candid look at this aging British rock star, who is recovering from a bout with depression and is ready to start a new chapter of his storied career.
