Three friends have a transhumanist experience while on summer vacation in Infinite Summer. Mia (Teele Kaljuvee-O’Brock) is a young Estonian woman, who goes on summer vacation with her childhood friend Grete (Johanna-Aurelia Rosin), who has returned home after studying in London, bringing along her Canadian friend Sarah (Hannah Gross). While using an “Extreme Dating” app, the girls match up with a man calling himself Dr. Mindfulness (Ciaron Davies). Dr. Mindfulness sells the girls respirator masks connected to an experimental mindfulness app named Eleusis, giving users a euphoric experience. However, Eleusis ends up changing Grete and Sarah’s biochemistry and Mia finds herself being tracked by Interpol detectives Jack (Steve Vanoni) and Katrin (Katariina Unt).
Infinite Summer Synopsis
Infinite Summer is a science fiction coming-of-age story written and directed by Estonian filmmaker Miguel Llansó (Crumbs, Jesus Shows You the Way to the Highway). The plot of the film focuses on the three female protagonists Mia, Grete, and Sarah, who begin having transhumanist experiences after using an experimental mindfulness respirator powered by an AI named Eleusis. After Sarah ends up hospitalized in a coma and Grete goes on the run, it is left to Mia to figure out what is the true endgame of Eleusis, before the Interpol detectives figure it out.
My Thoughts on Infinite Summer
Infinite Summer takes place in the near future, where augmented reality headsets are commonplace and an AI program is used to care for the animals at the Tallinn Zoo, where main protagonist Mia works. Through its very bizarre plot, Infinite Summer deals with themes that include technophobia, sexual awakening, and transcendence. While the subplot involving the Interpol detectives trying to figure out the origin of Eleusis ultimately does not have a satisfying resolution, Infinite Summer still ends up being an interesting transhuman experience.
