The life and story of professional wrestler Gertrude “Luna” Vachon is told in Lunatic: The Story. Gertrude Vachon was the adopted daughter of Montreal professional wrestler Paul “Butcher” Vachon, who was part of a wrestling dynasty that included Maurice “Mad Dog” Vachon and Vivian Vachon. Training to become a pro wrestler at the age of 16, Vachon developed her Satanic character of “Luna” during the 1980s in Florida Championship Wrestling and Wild Women of Wrestling. Luna made her World Wrestling Federation debut in 1993 at WrestleMania IX, at a time when women’s wrestling wasn’t taken seriously in the company. Suffering from bipolar disorder and abusing drugs, Luna never received the acclaim that she deserved.

Lunatic: The Luna Vachon Story is a biographical documentary about professional wrestler Luna Vachon, directed by Kate Kroll. Along with an archival interview with Luna herself, the film features interviews with friends and opponents Debra “Madusa” Miceli, Penelope Paradise, and Jacqueline Moore. The film also features one of the final interviews with Luna’s father, Paul Vachon and FCW faction leader Kevin Sullivan before they died in 2024. The also include ex-husband David “Gangrel” Heath, son Van Hurd, journalist Greg Oliver, and referee Aubrey Edwards.

My Thoughts Lunatic: The Luna Vachon Story

If you are already a follower of professional wrestling and/or watched the episode on Luna Vachon on the VICE documentary series Dark Side of the Ring, there isn’t much within Lunatic: The Luna Vachon Story that isn’t already knowledge, other than the accidental namedrop of a popular star from the 1980s and 1990s, who Luna claimed raped her when she was 13. The thesis of Lunatic: The Luna Vachon Story is that Luna Vachon was a pioneering woman wrestler who never got the acknowledgement she truly deserved, particularly from WWE, who quietly placed her in the “Legacy Wing” of their Hall of Fame nine years after her untimely death in 2010. If anything, Lunatic: The Luna Vachon Story is worth watching alone for the emotional final interview with Luna’s 85-year-old father, Paul Vahon, who, despite her tragic end, was still proud of his daughter.
