A lonely Montreal man finds love right as he is targeted for abduction by aliens in You Are Not Alone. Since the end of his previous relationship, Léo (Pier-Luc Funk) has preferred being alone, working night shifts delivering pizzas from his family’s pizzeria. Things begin turning around when Léo meets Rita (Marianne Fortier), a sweet-natured musician, who recently joined his mother Sylvie’s (Sandrine Bisson) volleyball team. However, despite his new good fortune, Léo has been made the target of John (François Papineau), an alien in the form of a cab driver, who abducts those who can easily disappear.
You Are Not Alone Synopsis
You Are Not Alone is the debut feature film from writer/directors Philippe Lupien and Marie-Hélène Viens. The film is a cross between a romance and science fiction thriller, described as Punch Drunk Love meets Under the Skin. The protagonist Léo’s newfound love for Rita disrupts the attempted abduction by the alien John, the latter of whom discovers a new fire inside Léo.
My Thoughts on You Are Not Alone
Directors Philippe Lupien and Marie-Hélène Viens use the science fiction elements of You Are Not Alone as a metaphor for the anxieties faced by the protagonist Léo over the prospect that he might be able to escape his lonely existence. You Are Not Alone also makes heavy use of French-Canadian singer/songwriter Roch Voisine, both through the use of his hit 1989 song “Hélène” and a sly cameo at one point. Altogether, You Are Not Alone ends up being a heartwarming mix of romance and science fiction.
