Shorts That Are Not Pants – January 2013
The quarterly short film showcase Shorts That Are Not Pants kicked off its second year last night at the Carlton Cinema. This fifth instalment featured everything from locally-made shorts, Canada’s Top Ten selections, Irish cop comedies, and a phone break-up visualized through animation. Some highlights from the showcase include:
-
Canada’s Top Ten selection Chef de meute (Herd Leader), which was a cute, but ultimately sad short.
-
Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson directed his father Brendan in the absolutely hilarious cop comedy Noreen.
-
Long Branch was a touching romance involving the TTC
-
Dear Scavengers dealt with a cranky appliance store owner, who has to deal with girls on a scavenger hunt
-
Finally, Requiem for a Romance was a glorious animated film, which visualized a break-up through water-coloured kung-fu imagery.
The filmmakers of Long Branch and Dear Scavengers were attendance for a Q&A after the screening. That’s my summary of the latest edition of Shorts That Are Not Pants. The next edition is set to occur in April.
