This Week in Movies – March 9-15

Here is what I have planned movie-wise in the upcoming week.

New Releases

  •  (March 11) – The long-awaited (as in over 80 years) film version of one of the first science fiction stories is the big release for this week.  I’m quite busy this weekend, though I plan on squeezing the film in on Sunday afternoon (following my annual viewing of the Toronto St. Patrick’s Day parade).

Repertory
  • Castle in the Sky (March 10) – The Studio Ghibli retrospective kicks off this weekend at the TIFF Bell Lightbox and I’m all set to see Hayao Miyazaki’s 1986 debut film.
  • Racing Dreams (March 15) – As part of the opening week for the, freshly renovated and renamed, Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, I’ll be going to a screening of this 2009 documentary.  I’m looking forward to seeing the refurbished cinema and you can be sure that I’ll write a report.
Other
  • Game of Thrones: The Exhibition (March 12) – To coincide with George R.R. Martin “In Conversation with…” session next week, the Bell Lightbox will be hosting an exhibition with props from the show.  I’ll be going to it on Monday and (even though it’s not necessarily film related) I’ll likely write about it.
Undecided
  • The Wicker Man (March 10) – I’ve been highly enjoying the retrospective at the Bell Lightbox and this is one of his most infamous recent roles (Not the Bees!).  I haven’t yet secured a ticket to this screening, though I might decide to see it last minute, since I will already be at the Lightbox to see Castle in the Sky.
  • Battle Royale (March 15) – This month’s “Cinemacabre” screening at the Toronto Underground is this ultra-violent Japanese cult classic.  I might consider going to see this after I’m finished at the Bloor cinema.
