TIFF14: Canadian Film Hightlights

Mommy The line-up for the 2014 edition of the Toronto International Film Festival continues to grow with yesterday’s announcement of the Canadian film line-up.  I am a dedicated supporter of homegrown Canadian cinema and I always try to make an effort to see at least one Canadian film at TIFF each year.  Without a doubt, the highlight of this year’s Canadian line-up is the Toronto premiere of Mommy, which is the latest film by Quebecois filmmaker (Tom at the Farm).  The film made a big splash at Cannes (winning the Jury prize) and is sure to be a film that shouldn’t be missed. Here are some of the other highlights of this year’s Canadian line-up: An Eye for Beauty (Le règne de la beauté) – Denys Arcand, Canada – Toronto Premiere (Special Presentations)
The latest film by Oscar-winning filmmaker Denys Arcand (The Barbarian Invasions) focuses on a architect, who meets a woman that turns his world upside down. Backcountry MacDonald, Canada – World Premiere (Discovery)
Based on a true story, Backcountry is about a couple, who get hopelessly lost in the wilderness and end up in a predatory bear’s territory. The Editor and , Canada – World Premiere (Midnight Madness)
From folks at Winnipeg’s Astron-6 (Father’s Day, Manborg) comes this homage to Italian giallo films. The Elephant Song – Charles Binamé, Canada – World Premiere (Special Presentations)
In addition to directing Mommy, Xavier Dolan stars in this film about a psychiatrist, who is drawn into a complex mind game. Preggoland – Jacob Tierney, Canada – World Premiere (Special Presentations)
From director Jacob Tierney (The Trotsky, Good Neighbours) comes this comedy about an outcast women, who is welcomed into a group of high school friends, after she is mistakenly thought to be pregnant. Teen Lust – Blaine Thurier, Canada – World Premiere (Contemporary World Cinema)
An awkward teen tries to lose his virginity before his Satanic parents can sacrifice him to the devil. ‘Nuff Said! That wraps up my highlights of the TIFF’s Canadian line-up. Please check the TIFF website for the full list and more details.
