TIFF14: Midnight Madness Highlights

The line-up has been announced for this year’s edition of the ever-popular Midnight Madness programme at the Toronto International Film Festival.  In my opinion, this year’s line-up is a particularly strong one, with there being many familiar names among the films announced.  One of those names is cult filmmaker Kevin Smith, who has chosen Midnight Madness as the place to host the world premiere of his twisted horror film Tusk, of which I posted the trailer a few days ago.  Kevin Smith is no stranger to the Toronto International Film Festival, since he screened his debut film Clerks at the festival twenty years ago and he returned for subsequent films, such as Dogma and Zack and Miri Make a Porno.  This marks Kevin Smith’s first entry in the Midnight Madness programme and, based on how devoted his fanbase is, this screening is sure to be a hot ticket. Here are some of the other films that will be screening as part of Midnight Madness this year: [REC] 4: Apocalypse – Jaume Balagueró, Spain – World Premiere
The popular Spanish zombie series brings back the original film’s protagonist for this concluding chapter.  I’ve only seen the third film in the [REC] series, but I am most definitely going to include this among the films I see as part of Midnight Madness this year. Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films – Mark Hartley, Australia – International Premiere
It isn’t often that a documentary is included as part of the Midnight Madness line-up. As such, this film about the 1980s action-exploitation juggernaut might be a film worth checking out. The Guest – Adam Wingard, USA – Canadian Premiere
I still have very fond memories of You’re Next‘s premiere at Midnight Madness back in 2011. As such, I’m quite interested in seeing Adam Wingard‘s follow-up. It Follows – David Robert Mitchell, USA – North American Premiere
The film is a ghost story with an STD twist. Sounds intriguing enough. Tokyo Tribe – Sion Sono, Japan – International Premiere (Midnight Madness Opening Film)
Following his incredibly popular Why Don’t You Play in Hell? last year, Sion Sono returns to open this year’s Midnight Madness line-up, with a film set in an alternate Tokyo of the near-future. What We Do in the Shadows – Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, New Zealand/USA – Canadian Premiere
