Martin Scorsese Teaches Filmmaking

Ever since the release of the high school-set noir Brick in 2005, which I consider to be one of my all-time favourite films, I have considered Rian Johnson to be a director to keep an eye on.  For his third, and most ambitious, feature Looper, Johnson reunites with Brick star Joseph Gordon-Levitt for a sci-fi action film about a group of assassins whose targets are sent to them from the future. I would say that Looper is a film that is best enjoyed the less you know about the plot.  The very basic details is that Gordon-Levitt plays as assassin named Joe, whose latest target is his future self (played by Bruce Willis). The future Joe goes on the run and the Joe of the present gets in trouble with his mafia bosses for letting him(self) slip away.  If that statement boggles your mind, you haven’t seen anything yet.  That said, the film doesn’t get TOO hung up with how time travel works in this world and the film has just as many slower character moments as it does (quite violent) action scenes. Overall, I found Looper to be an enjoyable film.  While, I’ll still consider Brick to be my favourite of Johnson’s films, Looper is still one fun mind twister of a movie. 9 | REALLY LIKED IT
