the 2016 Canadian Screen Award Nominees

CanadianScreenAwards

Earlier this week, the nominations were announced for the 2016 edition of the Canadian Screen Awards. Celebrating its fourth annual edition this year, the Canadian Screen Awards celebrate the best of film, television, and digital media in Canada.  My coverage is going to focus primarily on the film categories, so I will begin by providing my thoughts on the various nominees.

The leading film nominee this year is Room with 11 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Jacob Tremblay, Best Actress for , and Best Supporting Actress for Joan Allen. Room qualifies for the Canadian Screen Awards, since the film was a Canadian co-production with Ireland. This marks one of the few occasions a film is nominated for both the Canadian Screen Awards and Oscars, with Room having four nominations in the latter. Another Ireland/Canada co-production to get nominated is Brooklyn, which has three nominations, including Best Picture.

This year Canadian Screen Awards followed the example of the Oscars and expanded the number of Best Picture nominees to ten. In addition to Room and Brooklyn, the Best Picture nominees are CorboThe Demons, Felix and Meira, The Forbidden Room, My Internship in Canada, Our Loved Ones, Remember, and Sleeping Giant. It is interesting to note that about half of these nominees were just featured in the Canada's Top Ten Film Festival.

Some of the other leading film nominees of the Canadian Screen Awards include Hyena Road with 8 nominations, Our Loved Ones with 7 nominations, and EndorphineFelix and Meira, and Forsaken with 5 nominations each.

The 2016 Canadian Screen Awards will air live on CBC on March 13, 2016 at 8:00PM, capping off Canadian Screen Week, which takes place from March 7-13.
