There’s Something on Netflix – January 21, 2014

somethingonnetflix In this semi-regular column I will look through the Netflix Canada selection and give some recommendations to help curb the belief that there is nothing good on the service. With last week’s big film release being Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, I should note that Netflix currently has 3 of the 4 previous Jack Ryan films in their library. You can choose between The Hunt for Red October, Clear and Present Danger, and The Sum of all Fears.  Sadly, the most well known Jack Ryan film, Patriot Games is not among the selection. To help with this year’s Oscar catch-up, you can watch two of the nominated documentaries, The Square and Dirty Wars.  You can also watch last year’s documentary winner Searching for Sugar Man, as well as the Oscar nominated features Life of Pi, Flight, and The Sessions. A film that I am particularly interested in checking out is the martial arts film Tai Chi Zero, which played at TIFF in 2012.  Also available is Tai Chi Hero, which tells the second half of the story. If horror-comedies are your thing, why don’t you check out the Irish creature feature Grabbers, which was the opening film of the 2012 Toronto After Dark film festival.  Also, if you feel inclined, you can check out Sharknado, which had everyone talking last summer.  Then of course there’s the cannibal thriller Ravenous, which many now consider to be a cult classic. On the TV series front, you can check out the original series House of Cards, which will be starting a new season in a few weeks. Another original series worth watching is the prison dramedy Orange is the New Black. Netflix is also a great place to catch up with Breaking Bad, Doctor Who, and Sherlock. I also recommend the -starring spy series Covert Affairs, which was just added to the Netflix library. That wraps up my Netflix recommendations for today.  I’ll be back in about a month’s time to recommend some more selections from Netflix’s vast library.
