Two social workers and four delinquent teens travel to the rural British town of Mortlake for a community service project. The townsfolk are made up of bucktoothed hillbillies and it revealed fairly quickly that they don’t take too kindly to strangers. Inbred was hyped as the most gory film of this year’s Toronto After Dark and it definitely does not disappoint in that department. There’s everything from decapitations, shotguns to the head, explosions, chainsaws, and even death by horse. If the film was solely all about mindless gore of the grindhouse variety, I probably would’ve given it a pass. However, the film opted for a very mean spirited “sympathize with people and then watch them die” approach that really did not appeal to me. I get that horror is a genre that doesn’t always have to have a happy ending, however Inbred has villains so despicable that there was no way I was ever going to root for them no matter how “cool” the death scenes looked. To make matters worse, the lead antagonist Jim spends half the film in blackface, which makes you hate him even more. The hardest sequence to watch was the “show” Jim puts on for the locals, which consists of humiliating torture, followed by graphic death. It was here the film went from over-the-top grindhouse into torture porn and it was the point my opinion of the film started to skydive. The film does throw a bone to the audience in the third act and have the protagonists turn the tables on their attackers. However, once Jim makes the comment that “no one ever escapes” and I had a fairly good idea about where the film was going. In conclusion, even though I have nothing against over-the-top gory horror films, Inbred is such a mean-spirited film that I actually feel guilty about having seen it. While the film will most definitely satisfy the gorehounds out there, there are other films out there that have just as much gore, but can actually be considered entertaining (examples include Planet Terror and Tucker and Dale vs Evil). I do not and cannot recommend this film. 2 | REALLY DISLIKED IT
