Incendies is generally considered to be the best Canadian film from 2010 and it is currently on the shortlist of films being considered for a Best Foreign Film nomination at the Oscars.
The film centres around two siblings, who receive the unusual request in their mother’s will to location the father and brother that they never knew they had. Throughout the film the mother’s dark past in an somewhat anonymous middle-eastern country is revealed.
This is one of those films with a slow build to a big reveal. Towards the end of the film, you expect to already know all the major revelations before the film reveals one final unexpected twist, which knocks everything out of the park.
Incendies was definitely an excellent film and I would definitely recommend that people see it while it is playing at Bell Lightbox.
10/10
P.S. Since this screening was part of “Canada’s Top Ten,” there was a Q&A afterwards by director Denis Villeneuve, which was quite interesting (and entertaining).
