November is the start of the holiday movie season and it is usually the time when the Oscar bait starts showing up. While one film planned for this month was moved to next summer (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince), there is still plenty of fine picks this month.
Feature Film November 2008
After reigniting the James Bond franchise with Casino Royale, Daniel Craig returns for his second go as 007.
This film is notable in that it’s the first Bond film to be a direct sequel to a previous film. However, the film should also stand on it’s own like most Bond films.
Other Picks for the Month
Role Models – November 7
This film, which I believe is the first starring role for Paul Rudd, feels like a Judd Apatow-produced comedy (except without the involvement of Judd Apatow). This film looks like it may be fun and any film with foul-mouthed kids is almost guaranteed to be hilarious.
Slumdog Millionaire – November 12
The latest film by Danny Boyle won the People’s Choice award at the Toronto Film Festival. As such, I am interesting in seeing how good this film really is.
Australia – November 26
Baz Luhrmann returns with his film since 2001’s Moulin Rouge! I think this is probably one of the few films where Hugh Jackman is able to use his real accent (while the Australian/American Nicole Kidman uses a British accent). I definitely thing this romantic drama will be one of the must-see films of the month.
Milk – November 26
This story about the first gay man elected to public office, who is then assinated, is probably the most mainstream film for Gus Van Sant since Finding Forester way back in 2000. This film also looks to probably give Sean Penn another Oscar nomination.
May Check Out
Transporter 3 – November 26
I’ve only seen the first Transporter film (which was the film that helped Jason Statham break into the American market). If I somehow catch up with the second film, I may consider checking out the third.
Four Christmases – November 26
Vince Vaughn‘s last holiday comedy (Fred Claus) may have only made a wimper, but this film with Reese Witherspoon does look like it could be funny.
And that’s the picks for November.
