A cub scout troupe is terrorized while on a camping trip in Cub. Sam (Maurice Luijten) is a troubled 12 year old, who is bullied by the other kids in his cub scout troupe. While on a camping trip in the Belgian forest, Sam is shocked to discover that the local legend of a feral kid named Kai (Gill Eeckelaert) is true. However, it also appears that someone has been setting up some deadly booby traps in the woods.
Cub is a Belgian horror film that that centers on the outcast cub scout of Sam. Sam is repeatedly targeted by the other members of his troupe, as well as the mean-spirited leader Peter (Stef Aerts). Prior to leaving on their camping trip, the troupe is told the story of the feral “werewolf boy” Kai, who Sam quickly learns actually exists. However, the question that has to be asked is whether or not Kai is a friend or foe?
Cub is a film that somewhat takes its time to build up its horror, as things don’t really get going for the second half. However, the film does sport some quite well-executed deaths, where literally no one is safe. Cub also features a quite excellent Giallo-like score by Steve Moore (The Guest). Altogether, despite having a slow burn for much of the film, Cub ended up being a quite solid thriller.
