The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion

the witch part 1

A young woman’s past catches up to her in . A decade ago, Ja-yoon () escaped from a facility experimenting with telepathic kids and found refuge with a farmer and his wife. When she tries out for a TV talent show, Ja-yoon accidentally lets her powers slip and attracts the attention of the agency that has been tracking her down. Chased by both agents and fellow telepathic individuals, Ja-yoon has to come face-to-face with her past.

From writer/director Park Hoon-jung (I Saw the DevilV.I.P.) comes this film that combines action, supernatural horror, and a little bit of teenage coming of age. Seemly having no memory of the experiments performed on her as a child, Ja-yoon has lived a seemingly normal life over the last ten years. However, it isn’t long until her past catches up to her and she must use her abilities to beat the people who made her who she is.

By its very title, The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion is suggesting that this film is merely the first film in a series, though I do have to say that the film stands on its own as its own story. The film takes a bit more of a science fiction approach to the concept of witches, since these are just experimented on people with telepathic abilities. However, it does result in one hell of bloody climatic final fight and I do have to admit that I am interested to see Part 2.
