A police detective reluctantly teams with a crime boss, in order to catch a serial killer in The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil. Detective Jung Tae-seok (Kim Moo Yul) is a police detective with extreme methods, who are obsessed with apprehending local gangster Jang Dong-su (Don Lee). However, Jung and Jang have to put their differences aside when the city of Cheonan is tormented by the sadistic serial killer “K” (Kim Sung-kyu). With Jang having barely survived an attack from the killer, he becomes Jung’s only lead to identifying the killer. As such, this cop and gangster will have to team up to catch the devil.
The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil is a brutal crime thriller from first-time director Won-Tae Lee. With a title high evocative of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, this is a story that follows “two bad guys, catching the worst man.” The film is built around the lead performances of Don Lee (Train to Busan) and Kim Moo Yul as the frenemies of Detective Jung and Jang Dong-su, with Kim Sung-kyu always lurking in the background as the enigmatic killer “K.” Featuring equal parts dark humour and brutal violence, The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil is a demonstration of all that is currently great about South Korean genre cinema.
