The New York film set mascot who overcame homelessness and alcoholism to become a fixture of the New York film industry, with over 100 small parts to his name.
You may not know Craig “Radioman” Castaldo by his name, but I am almost certain that you have seen the guy. Radioman is known for appearing at the film sets around New York City, always with his bike and trusty radio. Often this results in him getting a brief cameo role in the production. In fact Radioman is so prolific, he is considered to be one of the main attractions of New York City.
Radioman looks (and acts) like an old homeless man (and/or Robin Williams) and in fact he was. However, he has since been able to make a meager living for himself by being an extra in hundred of movies. We are treated to various montages of his roles in everything from Mr Deeds to Godzilla to Shutter Island. In fact, I had so many “Oh…my…God…” moments watching clips from many movies that I have seen, though I did not previously notice the old man standing prominently in the shot.
Of course there is still an underlying sadness to Radioman’s story. Even though he makes all these cameos and is technically not homeless anymore, it seems obvious that he still somewhat lives in poverty (and is a bit of a hoarder). In addition, at one point of the film, Radioman makes the trip to Los Angeles in the hopes of crashing the Oscars. However, what he finds is place that is a lot less friendly than New York.
Overall, Radioman was a very interesting story about a very interesting man.
