Filmmaker Joe Berlinger documents one of Tony Robbins’ six day self-improvement seminars in Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru. Tony Robbins is one of the world’s top motivation speakers, with him having provided self-improvement advise in books and seminars for over three decades. For the first time ever, cameras are allowed inside Robbins’ annual “Date with Destiny” seminar, where Robbins motivates thousands of attendees over the course of a week.
It is probably safe to say that Tony Robbins is a self-improvement rock star. As such, it is probably fitting that Academy Award nominated filmmaker Joe Berlinger (Paradise Lost) has structured Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru like a concert film. Attendees pay nearly $5000 to attend Tony Robbins’ six day “Date with Destiny” seminar, with each day having a theme, such as preparation, evaluation, discovery, relationships, transformation, and finally integration.
For better or worse, Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru shows exactly what it is like to attend one of Tony Robbins’ seminars. As such, your opinion on the film will highly depend on how you think of the guy. This is definitely not the typical type of documentary Joe Berlinger is known for and I Am Not Your Gury actually feels quite formulaic at times, especially in how each day focuses on a single one-on-one intervention Robbins makes with an audience member. When it all comes down to it, Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru will either leave you feeling inspired or have you running away in fear.
