This film made some headlines over how the MPAA gave this film an NC-17 rating for some of the sexual content in the film (which was later successfully overturned to an R).  I won’t delve too much into this issue, since at the end of the day, it has little to do with the film itself.

The film centers on a couple played by and .  The narrative of the film moves back and forth between the start and end of their relationship, which lets the viewer compare the two time periods.  It’s almost like (500) Days of Summer, except a lot more serious and realistic.

The movie is definitely heartbreaking to contrast a young couple falling in “love at first sight” to seeing them many years later unhappily married and desperately trying to reignite the spark between them.

It is definitely an interesting film about the not-so-simple nature of relationships and the film features great performances by both Gosling and Williams.  Despite the controversy, it’s definitely worth checking out.

8/10
