I did not know what to think of the the film at first. I did agree that Winslet’s performance was good, but I didn’t get into the film right away.
However, when I finally did, the film turned into a very compelling look at how the suburban lifestyle can seem very deadend. It makes it all the more interesting that the film is set in the 1950s, since that decade has the image of the suburban lifestyle being the “perfect life,” thanks to shows such as Leave it to Beaver.
In the end, I have to agree that Winslet’s win was well-deserved and it would be interesting to see if the accolades carry into the Oscars.
