The Story of Film: An Odyssey – Episodes 3&4

storyoffilm54Last night I went to see the second batch of episodes from .  Here is what was covered. Episode 3: The Golden Age of World Cinema
This episode went all around the world describing eight film movements came to be during the 1920s.  This section includes the usual suspects, including French Impressionism, German Expressionism, Soviet Montage, and Surrealism.  There was actually quite of amount of time spent on the films that came out of Japan and China, including the early works of Yasujirō Ozu. Episode 4: The Arrival of Sound
The arrival of sound in the 1930s also signified the rise in popularity of genre films.  This episode looks into the rise of horror, musicals, westerns and gangster films, and the man in charge of many of them, Howard Hawks.  This episode also looks at the early films of Alfred Hitchcock and described the many ways that he was an innovator. After four episodes we are just over a quarter through The Story of Film: An Odyssey.  There is still plenty more film history to go.
