Two young women journey across zombie-infested Germany in Endzeit – Ever After. Following a plague leaving the world overrun by zombies, the two German towns of Weimar and Jena are the last holdouts of the human population. Vivi (Gro Swantje Kohlhof) and Eva (Maja Lehrer) are two very different women from Weimar, who involuntarily team up to travel across the countryside to get to Jena. During this journey, the two develop a strong friendship for each other.
Endzeit – Ever After is a post-apocalyptic drama directed by Carolina Hellsgård, based on the graphic novel by Olivia Vieweg, who also wrote the screenplay. The film focuses on two young women dealing with their own individual problems. Vivi is haunted by guilt over abandoning her younger sister, while Eva is a former photographer fed up with her role as expert zombie killer in Weimar. Together, Viva and Eva form a bond with each other, as they try to reach Jena, a town where the survivors are apparently researching a cure.
Despite the constant presence of the undead, Endzeit – Ever After isn’t exactly a story that I would describe as a “zombie film.” The film is much more about the growing friendship between Vivi and Eva and how both want to calm their individual demons. Endzeit – Ever After is a beautifully shot film, though the pacing might be a little slow for some genre fans. However, it is still a film that is worth checking out.
