A shy teenager participates in an international singing competition in Teen Spirit. Violet (Elle Fanning) is a 17 year old Polish girl living on farm with her mother (Agnieszka Grochowska) on the Isle of Wright. An aspiring singer, Violet meets former opera singer Vlad (Zlatko Buric) at a bar and he help her improve her singing, as she prepares to enter an international singing competition called Teen Spirit.
Teen Spirit is the directorial debut from actor Max Minghella, focusing on shy aspiring singer Violet on her journey to participate in an international singing competition. Elle Fanning does all her own singing in the film, with a soundtrack of pop hits ranging from Tegan and Sara’s “I Was a Fool” to Ellie Goulding’s “Lights,” with the majority of the performances presented in a bright and flashy music video fashion.
For those who are a fan of pop music, Teen Spirit is a pretty entertaining film, with some well-produced performance scenes. The stakes aren’t really too high in the plot of the film, other than Violet’s relationship with her mentor Vlad being threatened by Violet getting pre-competition record offer by producer Jules (Rebecca Hall). However, overall Teen Spirit is a bright and flashy crowd pleasing film.
