Golden Globe Predictions

This Monday it is time for the Golden Globe Awards.

As such, I shall now make my predictions:

Best Picture – Drama
Nominees:
A History Of Violence
Brokeback Mountain
The Constant Gardener
Good Night, And Good Luck
Match Point

Prediction: Brokeback Mountain
Alternate: The Constant Garderner
Reason: This is the first year in a while that I have yet to see any of these movies, so I’m going mostly on buzz.  Brokeback Mountain has been picking up awards all over the place, so I’ll be surprised if it DOESN’T win.  However, my second pick would be The Constant Garderner, which I have also been hearing good things about.

Best Picture – Musical or Comedy
Nominees:
Mrs. Henderson Presents

The Producers
The Squid And The Whale
Walk The Line

Prediction: Walk The Line
Alternates: The Squid and the Whale
Reason: This was a tough one.  I find that Walk The Line and The Squid and the Whale stand out in this list, and I think Walk The Line has been getting the better buzz of the two.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama
Nominees:
Russell Crowe – Cinderella Man
Philip Seymour Hoffman – Capote

Heath Ledger – Brokeback Mountain
David Strathairn – Good Night, And Good Luck

Prediction: Philip Seymour Hoffman
Alternate: Heath Ledger
Reason: All you need to do is see the trailer for Capote to see how good Hoffman’s performance is in that one.  However, if he doesn’t get it, I think Ledger will.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama
Nominees:
Maria Bello – A History Of Violence
Felicity Huffman – Transamerica
Gwyneth Paltrow – Proof
Charlize Theron – North Country
Ziyi Zhang – Memoirs Of A Geisha

Prediction: Felicity Huffman
Alternate: Charlize Theron
Reason: Because she players a transgendered person, I think Felicity Huffman stands out enough to win this award.  My alternate pick was really just a toss.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
Nominees:
Pierce Brosnan – The Matador
Jeff Daniels – The Squid And The Whale
Johnny Depp – Charlie And The Chocolate Factory
Nathan Lane – The Producers
Cillian Murphy – Breakfast On Pluto
Joaquin Phoenix – Walk The Line

Prediction: Joaquin Phoenix
Alternate: Jeff Daniels
Reason: Like Jamie Foxx last year, I think this will be the breakthrough year for Joaquin Phoenix.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
Nominees:
Judi Dench – Mrs. Henderson Presents

Laura Linney – The Squid And The Whale
Sarah Jessica Parker – The Family Stone
Reese Witherspoon – Walk The Line

Prediction: Reese Witherspoon
Alternate: Laura Linney
Reason: Reese Witherspoon is the one that really stands out here.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Nominees:
George Clooney – Syriana
Matt Dillon – Crash
Will Ferrell – The Producers
Paul Giamatti – Cinderella Man
Bob Hoskins – Mrs. Henderson Presents

Prediction: Matt Dillon
Alternate: Paul Giamatti
Reason: Matt Dillon was one of the most multi-dimensional characters in Crash (I’m surprised that doesn’t have a best picture nom).  He definitely will get this.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Nominees:
Scarlett Johansson – Match Point
Shirley MacLaine – In Her Shoes
Frances McDormand – North Country
Rachel Weisz – The Constant Gardener
Michelle Williams – Brokeback Mountain

Prediction: Michelle Williams
Alternate: Rachel Weisz
Reason: Once again, since I haven’t seen the movies, I’m going by what I’ve heard.

Best Director – Motion Picture
Nominees:
Woody Allen – Match Point
George Clooney – Good Night, And Good Luck
Peter Jackson – King Kong
Ang Lee – Brokeback Mountain
Fernando Meirelles – The Constant Gardener
Steven Spielberg – Munich

Prediction: Ang Lee
Alternate: Steven Speilberg
Reason: Brokeback Mountain is getting all the buzz, so I think Ang Lee will get the director’s award.

Best Screenplay – Motion Picture
Nominees:
Match Point – Woody Allen
Good Night, And Good Luck – George Clooney, Grant Heslov
Crash – Paul Haggis, Bobby Moresco
Munich – Tony Kushner, Eric Roth
Brokeback Mountain – Larry McMurtry, Diana Ossana

Prediction: Paul Haggis, Bobby Moresco
Alternate: Larry McMurtry, Diana Ossana
Reason: Crash is a film that really makes you think about racial prejudice and how different people express it.  It deserves to win here.

Best Original Score – Motion Picture
Nominees:

The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe – Harry Gregson-Williams

Reason: This one is a pure guess.

Reason: Another guess (though to be fair, I listened to a clip and the song’s not bad)

Kung Fu Hustle – China
Paradise Now – Palestine
Promise, The (Master Of The Crimson Armor) – China
Tsotsi – South Africa

Prediction: Kung Fu Hustle
Alternate: Paradise Now
Reason: I can’t believe I actually saw one of the foreign nominees this year.  Anyways, Kung Fu Hustle was a REALLY entertaining film and I think it will win.
