Hot Docs 2014: Awards Recipients Announced

Hot-Docs-2014-Logo Hot Docs has announced the awards for this year’s festival, which were presented yesterday Windsor Arms Hotel in Toronto. The awards were determined by four juries:

  • The Canadian Feature Documentary Jury: Shelley Ambrose (executive director, The Walrus Foundation; publisher, The Walrus magazine), Malcolm Ingram (director, CONTINENTAL, Hot Docs 2013), Stephen Schroeder (executive director, Calgary International Film Festival).
  • The International Feature Documentary Jury: Eborn, (director, PINE RIDGE, Hot Docs 2014), Gordon Quinn (artistic director and founder, Kartemquin Films), Tom Quinn (co-president, RADiUS-TWC).
  • The Mid-Length Jury: Thomas Balmès (director, HAPPINESS, Hot Docs 2014), Kirsten Johnson (director, cinematographer), Maxim Pozdorovkin (director, THE NOTORIOUS MR. BOUT, Hot Docs 2014).
  • The Shorts Jury: Jessica Oreck (director, AATSINKI: THE STORY OF ARCTIC COWBOYS, Hot Docs 2013), Florian Habicht (director, , Hot Docs 2014), Matthew Hays (Montreal-based critic, author, film festival programmer and university instructor).

Here are the list of recipients: Best Canadian Feature Documentary was presented to John Kastner’s Out of Mind, Out of Sight (my review of this film will be posted tomorrow) Special Jury Prize – Canadian Feature Documentary was presented to Before the Last Curtain Falls Emerging Canadian Filmmaker was presented to for Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story Emerging Canadian Filmmaker – Honourable Mention was presented to Amar Wala for The Secret Trial 5 Best International Feature Documentary was presented to Waiting for August Special Jury Prize – International Feature Documentary was presented to Walking Under Water Emerging International Filmmaker was presented to Orlando von Einsiedel for Virginia Best Mid-Length Documentary was presented to King of the Wind & Electric Queens Best Short Documentary was presented to Ghost Train Best Short Documentary – Honourable Mention was presented to Beach Boy The Lindalee Tracey Award was presented to Madeleine Grant and Johnson The Outstanding Achievement Award was presented to Curtis The Don Haig Award was presented to Michael McNamara The Gaiam TV Conscious Media Award was presented (earlier this week) to Napier for Mad as Hell Voting continues for the Just Eat Audience Award, which will be announced on Monday May 5, along with the Filmmaker-to-Filmmaker Award.
